New Learning in Art and Gan!

In Art, Susan showed the class a new way to paint called "Wet on Wet". Using water color paper, she painted with a wet sponge and then she used water colors on the wet paper. As a final step, Susan added Kosher salt to absorb the excess liquid from her painting. The children listened carefully to the 3 steps. They had one question for Susan..."Can we paint one color over another color?" "Yes"!
As you can see, our artists are following the steps, as they alternate between the sponge, the paint brush, and the salt.
The girls were very focused as they watched what happened when they painted a color on top of another color.
In Gan, Heidi had a fish on ice for the children to observe. Since we had studied the ocean in the fall, the children were able to answer many of Heidi's questions about the characteristics of a  fish.
Heidi removed one of the scales and put it in a magnifying cup for the children to see.
Everyone had a chance to examine the scale and describe how it was different than skin.
Then Heidi brought two more trays with things for the children to compare to the fish.  Did they have fins?  Did they have tails?  Did they have scales? The shrimp had some of the characteristics of a fish, but it did not have fins, or  scales.
The last thing that Heidi showed the class was a plant called Buddha's Hand.  The children thought that it was an octopus! It looked like an octopus with yellow tentacles. The plant smells like a lemon, and it is used to make lemon zest.
After the discussion in the science room, Heidi took the class to our aquarium. She challenged the children to find 4 living things.
The children were so excited to meet the challenge!
Jake is showing Heidi one of the living things, a snail that lives in water. In Art and Gan,we were so pleased to see how the children are applying the skills that we use in class such as following directions. We also enjoyed seeing how well they are using previously taught concepts in different instructional settings. Thumbs up to the Curious George class!!
